Identifying Wood Cockroach
Wood cockroaches (Parcoblatta spp.) are medium-sized, light to dark brown insects commonly found outdoors in woodpiles, under bark, and in mulch. Males, about 1 inch long, have full wings and can fly; females are shorter with reduced wings. These cockroaches live and breed outdoors, feeding on decaying plant matter. They may enter homes accidentally, often attracted to lights at night, but they do not establish indoor infestations like German cockroaches. Their life cycle includes egg, nymph, and adult stages, taking up to two years to complete. Wood cockroaches are most active in warm months, especially spring and summer during mating season. While they pose no health threat, sealing entry points and reducing outdoor lighting can help prevent them from entering buildings.
