Identifying Field Cricket
Field crickets (Gryllus spp.) are medium to large, dark brown or black insects found mainly outdoors in fields, lawns, and gardens. Measuring ¾–1½ inches long, they have strong hind legs for jumping and long antennae. Females have a prominent ovipositor for laying eggs. Males produce a loud, steady chirp by rubbing their wings together, especially during warm nights. Field crickets feed on plants, seeds, and other insects, and can damage crops, turf, and garden plants. They are most active outdoors in summer and early fall, occasionally entering buildings in search of warmth. Eggs are laid in soil in the fall, overwinter, and hatch in spring. Most species produce one to two generations annually. While not harmful to humans, their noise and indoor presence can be bothersome.
