Winter Seasonal Pests

Rodents Are Most Active in Winter—And Insects Aren’t Far Behind

Pests come in the house to find warmth for the cold winter months.

Contrary to what many homeowners believe, winter is not a pest-free season. While some insects go dormant, many pests—including rodents—actively seek warmth and food inside homes during the coldest months of the year.

At A1 Exterminators, we provide reliable winter pest control across New England, targeting the most common invaders before they cause property damage or health concerns.

Rodents: The Most
Persistent Pest

Key signs of rodent activity include:

Mice and rats are highly active in winter as they look for warmth and steady food sources indoors.

  • Scurrying or scratching sounds in walls or ceilings
  • Chewed food packaging or droppings in pantries, drawers, or garages
  • Nesting material such as paper, insulation, or fabric scraps
  • Listen for noise in the walls
  • Look out for droppings or chewed food wrappers found in rooms where you didn’t leave food

Where They Hide:
  • Kitchens (especially behind appliances)
  • Basements near the furnace or water heater
  • Attached garages or storage areas

Mice weigh only about one ounce and can lose body heat quickly, which is why they tend to stay close to heat sources like furnaces. With their small range of movement (around 10 feet), it’s common for them to travel short distances from warmth to food—often in areas between the kitchen and mechanical rooms.

Why Winter Pest Control Matters

While less visible, many insects are still active indoors during winter or are quietly overwintering inside your walls and attic. Common winter pests include:

  • Spiders – Found in corners, basements, closets, or garages
  • Cockroaches – Thrive in kitchens and under appliances where food and moisture are present
  • Pavement ants – Often nest under floors or near slab foundations
  • Winter moths and western conifer seed bugs – Attracted to indoor lights and warmth
  • Centipedes – Prefer damp spaces like basements and bathrooms
  • Earwigs – Typically outdoor pests but may migrate inside during colder months

These pests often entered the home during the fall and are now hiding in walls, attics, crawl spaces, and behind baseboards—waiting out the cold until spring.
