Identifying Springtails
Springtails (Collembola) are tiny, wingless insects typically 1–2 mm long, found in moist environments like soil, leaf litter, mulch, and damp basements. Their color varies from white and gray to brown, black, or mottled. They possess a forked tail-like appendage called a furcula, which allows them to jump several times their body length. Feeding on fungi, algae, mold, and decaying matter, springtails are beneficial in nature but can become nuisance pests indoors when moisture is high. They do not bite, sting, or spread disease. Reproduction occurs year-round in warm, damp conditions, with development from egg to adult in just weeks. Populations can build quickly, and sightings often indicate excess moisture. Control focuses on reducing humidity and fixing leaks rather than chemical treatments.
