Meadow voles are small, unassuming rodents that live just beneath the surface of meadows, fields, and grassy landscapes. With stout bodies, short tails, and soft brown fur, they resemble chunky mice. Beneath the cover of tall grasses, they carve out elaborate networks of runways and burrows, weaving tunnels that provide both shelter and hidden highways through their environment. This unseen infrastructure not only keeps them safe from predators but also aerates soil and supports plant health. Meadow voles are prolific breeders—among the fastest-reproducing mammals in North America. A single female can produce multiple litters each year, with each litter containing 4–8 young.
