Understanding the Tick Life Cycle
Ticks are arachnids—related to spiders and mites—with four life stages:
- Egg – A single female can lay 3,000–6,000 eggs.
- Larva (“seed tick”) – Waits in clusters for a host, feeds, then drops off.
- Nymph – Seeks a new host, feeds, and molts into an adult.
- Adult – Finds a host, mates, and continues the cycle.
Depending on the species and conditions, ticks can complete this cycle in as little as two months or as long as two years.
