Identifying Deer Mice

The deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) is a small, nocturnal rodent with a white underbelly and brown or gray back, plus a bicolored tail. It’s common across North America, especially in rural areas, farms, and wooded habitats, but may enter homes and outbuildings in colder seasons. Deer mice are omnivorous and feed on seeds, insects, fruits, and grains. Though small and seemingly harmless, they are known carriers of hantavirus, a severe and sometimes fatal respiratory disease. They also may spread salmonella and parasites. Deer mice reproduce rapidly, producing several litters per year. Signs of infestation include droppings, shredded nesting material, and gnaw marks. Because of the health risks, professional rodent control and exclusion are strongly recommended for safe, long-term removal.
