Identifying White-Footed Mouse
True to its name, the white-footed mouse has bright white feet and underbelly, contrasting with its brownish back and head. These mice are highly intelligent and inquisitive, often outsmarting traps and adapting quickly to changes in their environment. White-footed mice are excellent climbers and jumpers, often found in trees and shrubs, as well as burrows. They use their tails for balance and are agile in both forest and brushy habitats. They construct complex nests made from shredded bark, grass, feathers, and even bits of fabric or paper—often hidden in tree hollows, logs, or abandoned burrows. As nocturnal creatures, they do most of their foraging and activity at night. During the day, they stay hidden and rest in their cozy nests. White-footed mice are prolific food stashers. They gather seeds, nuts, and insects and store them in hidden caches to prepare for winter. In warm months, a female can produce up to 4 litters per year, each with 3–7 babies. This high reproductive rate helps them recover quickly from population drops.
