Identifying Wolf Spider
Wolf spiders (Lycosidae) are medium-to-large, fast-moving spiders known for hunting rather than spinning webs. Typically brown, gray, or tan with darker stripes or markings, they blend into natural environments like grass, soil, and leaf litter. Found in gardens, fields, forests, and sometimes indoors, they live in burrows or roam in search of prey. Their large, forward-facing eyes give excellent night vision. Females carry their egg sacs attached to their spinnerets and later carry the spiderlings on their backs until they can fend for themselves. They breed in spring and summer, with a lifespan of 1–2 years. Though their bite is not dangerous to humans, it may cause mild pain and swelling. Wolf spiders are beneficial predators that help control pest insects.
