Identifying Western Conifer Seed Bug

Many people mistake the Western Conifer Seed Bug for a stink bug, often asking, “What are these skinny stink bugs?” Unlike stink bugs, this pest has a longer body and unique, leaf-shaped hind legs—earning it the nickname “leaf-footed bug.” Measuring about ¾ inch, it has a reddish-brown to dark brown body with checkered edges. These bugs feed on conifer seeds and emit a loud buzzing when flying. Though unrelated to stink bugs, they also release a foul odor when threatened—or even when crushed. In fall, they seek warmth and often invade homes to overwinter, becoming a smelly nuisance. Once inside, they gather near windows, walls, and ceilings. To prevent infestations, seal cracks around windows, doors, and foundations. Their odor, noise, and numbers can be overwhelming indoors. If you’re seeing “skinny stink bugs,” it may be time to call A1 Exterminators.
