Identifying Weevils – Pantry Pests
Weevils are small herbivorous beetles typically under 6 mm long, with over 97,000 known species. They feature long snouts, six legs, and elbowed antennae. Adults are often reddish-brown to black, sometimes with wing patterns. Some species, like the rice weevil, can fly and have fully developed wings with light yellowish spots. In contrast, granary weevils are flightless. Larvae are creamy-white, legless, with dark heads, and feed inside grain kernels. Weevils commonly infest corn, wheat, rice, beans, nuts, cereals, cotton, grapes, apples, and pears. Females may lay 300–400 eggs in their lifetime. The life cycle—egg, larva, pupa, adult—can be completed in as little as 26 days in warm conditions, extending in cooler temperatures. Adults live 4–5 months and are a major pest in stored grain and food products.
