Identifying Stink Bug

The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) is a common agricultural pest about ½ inch long, known for the strong, unpleasant odor it releases when threatened. BMSBs have a brownish color with copper, black, or gray markings and straight, cylindrical back legs—unlike the Western Conifer Seed Bug (WCSB), whose hind legs are widened and leaf-shaped. BMSBs damage fruit and vegetable crops by piercing and sucking juices, while WCSBs primarily invade homes in fall seeking shelter and cause nuisance with their odor and buzzing. To prevent infestations, seal cracks around windows and doors, remove standing water, and eliminate food sources. If you spot these bugs, contact a pest professional to manage the problem safely. Knowing the difference between BMSBs and WCSBs helps protect your crops and property from these common pests.
