Identifying Raccoons
Easily recognizable by their ringed tails and masked faces, raccoons are common throughout North America—especially in urban areas where they adapt well to human environments. Less common in remote rural regions, they are primarily nocturnal, with most of their activity occurring at night. Raccoons are intelligent, curious, and often mischievous, known for rummaging through trash, pet food, and even accessing attics or chimneys for nesting. In New England, raccoons can grow quite large, sometimes exceeding 50 pounds. Though the average wild raccoon lives 2–3 years, those in favorable conditions—like urban or suburban areas—have been known to live up to 12 years. Despite their cute appearance, raccoons can carry diseases like rabies and raccoon roundworm, so humane and professional removal is recommended when they become a nuisance.
