Identifying Oriental Cockroach
Despite the name, Oriental cockroaches aren’t true waterbugs. They’re often called this because they thrive in damp, dark, and cool environments like sewers, drains, and basements. These cockroaches are shiny black or very dark brown, giving them a slick, oily look. This darker coloration helps them blend into shadowy, moist environments. Oriental cockroaches are notorious for producing a strong, musty odor, especially when infestations grow. The smell comes from chemicals they secrete, which can linger in enclosed spaces. Compared to other cockroach species, Oriental cockroaches are relatively sluggish. They move more slowly and are less likely to scatter instantly when exposed. The males have wings that cover about ¾ of their abdomen but can’t fly. Females have only tiny wing stubs and are completely flightless. Oriental cockroaches are more cold-tolerant than many other species, which is why they can survive in cooler basements and crawlspaces where others might not. Unlike some other roaches, Oriental cockroaches struggle to climb smooth vertical surfaces, which can sometimes trap them in sinks, tubs, or glass containers. Because they crawl through sewers and decaying matter, Oriental cockroaches can pick up and spread bacteria, viruses, and parasites, contaminating food and surfaces in homes Despite their name, Oriental cockroaches likely originated in Africa or southern Russia, not the Orient. They’ve since spread globally, especially in urban environments.
