Identifying Opossums
Opossums are North America’s only marsupials, known for their adaptability and ability to thrive in diverse habitats. They have a prehensile tail for climbing and grasping, and opposable thumbs on their hind feet. Opossums are omnivorous, eating fruits, insects, and small animals. When threatened, they may ‘play dead’ as a defense mechanism. Although they have a somewhat fearsome appearance, they help control pests such as ticks and insects.
