Identifying Odorous House Ant

Odorous House Ants are small, brown to black ants known for the strong, rotten coconut-like smell they produce when crushed. Known by several other common names due to its distinctive characteristics:

  • Sugar Ants: They are attracted to sweet foods, often found foraging for sugar in homes.
  • Stink Ants: They release a pungent odor when crushed or threatened.
  • Coconut Ants: The smell they emit is often compared to the scent of rotten coconuts.

They nest in a variety of locations, including soil, wall voids, and under debris. Odorous House Ants are highly adaptable and will feed on a wide range of foods, especially sweets. They are persistent foragers and can quickly become a nuisance indoors. Colonies can have multiple queens, making them challenging to eliminate.
