Identifying Larder Beetle

The Larder Beetle (Dermestes lardarius) is a well-known pest of stored meats and other animal-based products. Measuring about 7–9 mm long, it has a distinctive pale yellow band across its wing covers with six black spots. Larder beetles are attracted to protein-rich materials, including cured meats, cheese, pet food, and even dead insects or rodents. Larvae are covered in bristly hairs and can bore into wood or insulation while seeking pupation sites. Infestations are commonly found in pantries, kitchens, and storage areas. Preventing infestations requires proper food storage, cleaning up spills promptly, and removing any animal carcasses from the property. Professional control may be necessary if beetles are emerging from hidden areas inside walls or attics.
