Identifying House Spider
The common house spider (Parasteatoda tepidariorum) is a small, non-venomous spider commonly found indoors. It ranges in color from yellowish-brown to gray, with a mottled, bulbous abdomen and eight slender, often banded legs. These spiders spin irregular, messy webs in quiet corners, basements, and windowsills. They pose no threat to humans and are actually beneficial, feeding on flies, mosquitoes, and other small pests. Females lay egg sacs year-round indoors, with each sac containing up to 400 eggs. Spiderlings disperse by ballooning and reach adulthood in 6–12 months. The house spider’s lifespan ranges from 1 to 2 years in stable indoor environments. While they help control other insects, their webs can be a nuisance in homes and commercial properties. Removal is simple through vacuuming or light cleaning, and infestations are rarely severe.
