Identifying Drugstore Beetle
Drugstore beetles (Stegobium paniceum) are small, light to reddish-brown beetles known for infesting a wide range of stored products including dried foods, spices, herbs, pharmaceuticals, leather goods, and even books. They get their name from their historical association with infesting medicinal herbs and pharmaceuticals. Adults measure 2 to 3 millimeters long and have a distinctive hump-backed, oval body shape. They have wings and can fly, which aids in spreading infestations. Larvae feed on a variety of dry organic materials, causing damage and contamination. The species undergoes complete metamorphosis from egg through larva, pupa, and adult, completing their life cycle in 6 to 8 weeks depending on temperature and food availability. Drugstore beetles thrive in warm environments and are common pests in homes, warehouses, and food processing facilities. Proper sanitation and storage practices are key to preventing infestations.
