Identifying Daddy Long Leg Spider

Daddy longlegs, also known as harvestmen (Opiliones), are harmless arachnids with very long, thin legs and small, round bodies. Unlike spiders, their body appears as a single segment, and they do not produce silk or venom. They cannot bite or sting and pose no threat to humans or pets. Found in moist, shaded environments like under logs, rocks, mulch, and basements, they feed on decaying organic matter, small insects, and fungi—making them beneficial in natural ecosystems. Daddy longlegs reproduce in spring and summer, laying eggs in soil or crevices. The young molt multiple times before becoming adults and can live up to 1–2 years. Despite persistent myths, they are not venomous and are not considered pests. While they may occasionally wander indoors, they do not infest structures or damage property and are easily removed with light cleaning or exclusion methods.
