Identifying Beavers
Beavers are large, semi-aquatic rodents known for their powerful teeth and dam-building behavior. While beneficial to some ecosystems, they are often considered pests when their dams cause flooding, damage property, or interfere with agricultural or forestry operations.
In New England, beavers are active year-round, but their activity level changes with the seasons:
-
Spring – High activity: Repairing dams/lodges after winter ice damage, foraging for fresh vegetation, and raising young.
-
Summer – High activity: Feeding heavily on aquatic plants and maintaining dams and canals.
-
Fall – High activity: Cutting and storing branches for winter food caches, reinforcing lodges before freeze-up.
-
Winter – Low activity: Mostly remain inside lodges, feeding on stored food; activity under the ice near the lodge and food cache.
