Identifying Angoumois Grain Moth
The Angoumois grain moth (Sitotroga cerealella) is a small, buff-colored insect that infests stored grains such as wheat, corn, barley, oats, and rice. Adults measure 10–18 mm across the wings and have narrow forewings fringed with long hairs. Females lay eggs directly on grain kernels, and the larvae bore inside, feeding and developing within the seed. This causes reduced weight, quality loss, and lower germination rates. The life cycle—egg, larva, pupa, adult—can be completed in as little as 5–7 weeks under warm conditions, allowing several generations annually. Infestations occur in the field before harvest and in storage facilities. Because larvae develop inside the grain, they are hard to detect until adults emerge. Prevention includes proper grain drying, storage sanitation, and fumigation if needed.
