Identifying Subterranean Termite

Subterranean termites are the most widespread and destructive group of termites in the U.S., responsible for most structural timber damage. These pests live in underground colonies and enter homes through mud tubes to feed on wood, often undetected. Workers and soldiers are about ¼” long, while winged swarmers (reproductives) are around ½” long. Workers have narrow thoraxes, broader heads and abdomens, and are creamy white. Soldiers have elongated, light yellow, quadrangular heads with straight mandibles that curve at the tips. Swarmers are dark brown to black with long, translucent wings and emerge in spring to form new colonies. Subterranean termites thrive in moist soil and can damage foundations, flooring, and wooden structures from the inside out. Their silent feeding habits make early detection difficult. Signs include mud tubes, discarded wings, and hollow-sounding wood. Termite damage can compromise the structural integrity of buildings, often without visible signs until severe. Prompt professional treatment is key to preventing extensive damage.
