Identifying Sowbugs & Pillbugs
Sowbugs and pill bugs are small, gray, crustacean-like pests often mistaken for insects. Also called “roly-polies,” pill bugs can roll into a ball when threatened, while sowbugs cannot and have small tail-like appendages. Both have segmented, armored bodies and 14 legs. They thrive in moist environments, feeding on decaying organic matter. Outdoors, they’re commonly found under mulch, rocks, and logs; indoors, they may wander into basements, garages, or bathrooms but cannot survive without moisture. Though harmless and non-destructive, their presence in homes is a sign of excess moisture or poor drainage. They don’t bite, sting, or damage structures but can become a nuisance in large numbers. Reducing moisture and sealing entry points are key to prevention. While they play a helpful role in breaking down organic matter outdoors, pill bugs and sowbugs become unwelcome guests when they migrate indoors.
