Identifying Honey Bee
The honey bee (genus Apis) is known for producing and storing honey and building wax-based colonial nests. The most familiar species is the Western honey bee, widely domesticated for honey and pollination. Honey bees are highly social insects with long-lasting colonies centered around a single queen. The queen, a long-lived egg-layer, secretes pheromones that regulate the behavior of her offspring. Female worker bees remain unmated and are adapted for gathering nectar, pollen, water, and resin (propolis), and for producing wax. Colonies consist of multiple generations, all cooperating within the same nest. While some stingless bee species also produce honey and are kept by humans, only members of the Apis genus are considered true honey bees. Their structure, communication, and role in agriculture make honey bees vital to ecosystems worldwide.
