Second only to termites in their ability to destroy wood, Powderpost Beetles are notorious pests that infest and damage dry, seasoned hardwoods such as flooring, furniture, cabinets, and structural beams. These beetles are small, ranging from 1/12″ to 1/3″ long, and are reddish-brown to nearly black in color. Their flattened bodies and visible heads set them apart from other wood-boring insects. The most telltale sign of an infestation is the presence of small, round exit holes in wood, often surrounded by a fine, talc-like powder known as frass. This dust is created as the larvae tunnel and feed within the wood for months or even years. While adult beetles emerge to mate and lay eggs, the real damage is done by the larvae.
