Pantry Weevils: Identification & Prevention
Weevils (including rice weevils and granary weevils) are small beetles with elongated snouts that infest dry foods. Most are under 6 mm long and can multiply quickly in warm kitchens and pantries.
What Are Weevils?
Weevils are herbivorous beetles in the superfamily Curculionoidea. Common pantry species—rice weevil and granary weevil—develop inside stored products, so you may notice damage or fine dust before you see the insects themselves.

Keeping Your Pantry Weevil-Free
- Airtight storage: Use glass, metal, or thick plastic containers with tight lids.
- Rotate and date: Buy smaller quantities, label dates, and use older stock first.
- Inspect on purchase: Check bags for damage before bringing them home.
- Quarantine and freeze: Seal suspect items and freeze for 2–3 days to kill eggs and larvae.
- Clean routinely: Empty shelves, vacuum crumbs, and wipe with a mild cleaner.
- Dispose correctly: Bag and remove infested items from the home immediately.
- Natural aids: Bay leaves or peppercorns are anecdotal only—sanitation and sealing work best.
